Career Path — Break into GBS

Break into GBS from the hiring side

You want to get into Global Business Services, Shared Services, or business process outsourcing, and nobody has told you how the hiring side actually works. This playbook is written from the other side of the table. It covers what happens to your CV before a human sees it, how a referral changes your route entirely, what a hiring manager is really deciding once you are on the shortlist, and how to run the whole search like a project instead of a hobby.

Getting hired is a skill nobody teaches at work, and most advice about it comes from people who have never sat on the other side of the table. This playbook is built from what a hiring manager actually does with your application: what the tracking system does to your CV before a human sees it, why a referral changes your route completely, and what is really being decided in the room once everyone on the shortlist can already do the job.

Two stages, from setting your expectations to handling the room. Click either to jump to it.

Before You Start

How this path works

Built from the hiring side

  • What a hiring manager actually does with your application
  • Written from real interviews, not job-board advice
  • Covers the parts nobody tells candidates

Preparation is what you control

  • Your stage and the market set the difficulty
  • Everything else is preparation, and almost nobody does it properly
  • Run the search as a project, not a hobby

Templates you actually use

  • CV evidence builder, application tracker, interview prep sheet
  • Plus a brag sheet for day one of the new role
  • Built to be edited, ready for your real application
The Opportunity

Why the door in is wider than it looks

People waste months hunting for a way in that does not exist. The honest answer is simpler, and it makes the target concrete.

The realistic first role

Most new-joiner roles in Global Business Services are analyst or processor roles. That is the door. You are not hunting a rare opening, you are competing for a role that exists in volume, which means preparation is what separates you.

Your other experience counts

Coming from finance, operations, customer service, or business process outsourcing, your work already touches process, controls, stakeholders, and data. Described in those terms it reads as relevant rather than unrelated.

The referral changes the route

Everything else in this playbook is optimization. A referral is the one move that changes how you get there, because it walks past the tracking system and puts you in front of a person.

Your Toolkit

Apply it at work — not just on the page

Reading changes nothing on its own. These three tools turn each module into action: a weekly prompt, a desk reminder, and a place to bank the proof.

Know Your Difficulty Before You Start

Two things decide how hard this will be before you write a word, and neither is your fault. Getting them straight early is what stops you reading normal silence as personal failure.

1.1Your Stage and Your Market Set the Game
Key principle

There is no single job-hunting process. There are four, and the market decides the speed.

People burn out because they expect one process for everybody. A total newcomer, someone with a few years, an advanced specialist, and a leader are playing four different games. What you lead with changes at every stage.

On top of that sits supply and demand. If you are an expert the market wants, the process is easy. Apply into a saturated market and the same effort takes far longer. That is the market, not a verdict on you.

Set your expectation from both, then put your energy where it actually pays, which is preparation.

1.2Three Hurdles, Run in Parallel
Key principle

Most people treat the application as one hurdle. It is three.

Before anyone judges whether you can do the job, you have to get in front of them. That happens across three separate hurdles, and the mistake almost everyone makes is running them one at a time.

First, pass the applicant tracking system, because software reads your CV before a human does. Second, make the CV genuinely worth reading, which is longer-term work. Third, find someone who will refer you, which walks you past the first hurdle entirely.

Work all three at once. Spending three months perfecting a CV before you speak to a single human is the slowest possible version of this.

Everything the Hiring Side Knows and You Do Not
