Free vs VIP

See the difference before you pay

The free tier teaches you the theory — the frameworks, models, and vocabulary of GBS. VIP takes the same topics and turns them into work you can ship this week: playbooks, real examples, templates, and field-tested calls from someone who did the job.

What changes when you manage former peers

Moving from individual contributor to manager changes everything — your relationship with former peers, your success metrics, and the skills that made you successful. The first 90 days define your credibility.

Yesterday you were part of the team. Today you lead it. The fastest way to fail is to pretend nothing changed.

2.4 · The Authority Shift: Peer to Boss, Equal Treatment, Professional Distance

  • A step-by-step playbook for your first two weeks of authority
  • A real From-the-Field story — how the shift goes wrong, in Julian's words
  • An AI exercise: draft your first-week team message, then make it yours
  • A comparison table — equal treatment vs. old-peer habits to drop
  • A template you adapt and use, not just read

What VIP sounds like

"The TL-to-Manager gap is wider than it looks. What the next level actually requires: stronger stakeholder management — more senior, more demanding, more political. Comfort with complexity across multiple teams, not depth in one. Breadth of experience — having led different teams, not just one — significantly strengthens your case."

The System

The 5-Step Career Booster

Every learning path follows this system. Five steps that build on each other — but not a rigid waterfall. Depending on where you stand, you may work on performance and visibility at the same time. The assessment tells you where to focus. What matters: don't skip the foundation. Performance comes before positioning.

THE 5-STEP CAREER BOOSTER STEP 1 Career Mindset STEP 2 Job Value & Performance STEP 3 Visibility & Ambition STEP 4 Next-Role Skills STEP 5 Execute CAN OVERLAP
1

Career Mindset

What do you actually want? Where do you stand — honestly? Self-assessment, strengths, weaknesses, and your Career Chessboard position before anything else begins.

2

Job Value & Performance

Understand what matters in your role. Find and close your skill gaps — hard and soft. Become demonstrably above average. This is the non-negotiable foundation.

3

Visibility & Ambition

Make your work known. Build your network in all directions. Find a visibility channel that fits your personality. Express your ambitions — at the right time, in the right way.

4

Next-Role Skills

Understand what the next role actually requires — from real job descriptions. Build those capabilities before you hold the title. Promotions go to people already operating above their level.

5

Execute

Get promoted. Negotiate the raise. Apply for the role. Earned at Steps 2-4, executed here. With evidence, the ask is a logical conclusion.

The Promise

Follow this and you will get promoted

We repeat it because it matters. There are no cheat codes or tricks that make you look better than you are — those collapse the moment someone checks. We want you to be successful through knowledge, clarity, and real capability. Five rules:

  1. Develop the skills to perform well — hard skills and soft skills, deliberately.
  2. Understand the goals — what your manager and your department are working toward.
  3. Actually perform — above average, consistently, not once.
  4. Be seen. Make your contribution visible in a way that fits who you are.
  5. Actively ask for what you want — at the right time, in the right way, with evidence.

Study Guide — How to Learn

In order to get the most out of the career path, you need to apply, experiment, and habitualize the career advice and techniques. The risk: you read, nod your head, and forget. We want you to be successful — so we don't only need your full attention, we need your active support and willingness to execute.

The Core Method

"Repetition makes the master" is what we say in Germany. The science backs it up: active recall — testing yourself from memory — outperforms passive re-reading by a factor of two or more. Spaced repetition — revisiting material at increasing intervals — beats cramming every time. And the Feynman Technique says: if you can explain something simply, you know it. If you can't, you've found your gap.

Step 1

Focus on just one new topic a day.

Not three. One. Give it your full attention. Quality beats quantity.

Step 2

Summarize it without looking.

Close the material. Write or speak what you understood in your own words. If you struggle — go back and re-read. This is active recall, and it works.

Step 3

Apply this at work next morning.

Use it. Afraid to make a mistake? You can make mistakes — that's how skills are built. Plan exactly when and where you'll use it: "In tomorrow's 1:1, I will try the 3-sentence summary technique." This is an implementation intention, and it doubles follow-through.

Step 4

Repeat.

Revisit yesterday's topic briefly before starting today's. One minute of recall compounds over weeks.

Step 5

Next topic.

Move on only when the previous one feels natural — not memorized, but habitualized.

Ninety days of this compounds you into a fundamentally different professional. Every module ships with a practical exercise designed to be done at your actual job. If you only read, you bought another theory course — and you already have one for free.

1

Teach It Back

  • Explain what you learned to a colleague — informally, over coffee, in a team chat
  • Teaching forces you to organize your understanding
  • If you can teach it, you own it
  • If you stumble, that's the gap to go back to
2

Reflect for Two Minutes

  • End-of-day, two questions: What did I try today? What happened?
  • This micro-reflection turns experience into learning
  • Without it, the insight evaporates by morning
  • Two minutes — not a journal, just a mental check
3

Spaced Review

  • Before starting this week's topic, spend five minutes recalling last week's
  • The forgetting curve is real — we lose 70% within 24 hours without review
  • A brief review at the right interval locks knowledge in permanently
  • One minute of recall beats thirty minutes of re-reading

AI: Accelerate Your Learning Trajectory

Here are a few practical techniques using AI to amplify everything you learn. Associates who use AI properly operate with capabilities it took senior colleagues years to develop — drafting, analyzing, preparing, practicing. Every module in every path includes an AI application alongside the manual approach.

Not every organization permits AI use at every level. Where it doesn't, each exercise includes a manual alternative.

Here are 3 very practical tips to get more out of AI:

Technique 01

Prompt Reversal

  • Don't write long prompts yourself
  • Tell AI your goal, ask it to write the optimal prompt for you
  • Copy it back, adjust slightly, run it
  • Beats hand-crafted prompts and prompt libraries
Technique 02

The Session Document

  • Write a job description for your AI: role, context, voice, status
  • Define human-in-the-loop checkpoints — where you review and decide
  • Hand it over at the start of every new session
  • Your AI starts every conversation already briefed
Technique 03

Interview Mode

  • Don't say "write me X"
  • Say: "I need X. Interview me first — ask me 10 questions about my situation"
  • AI combines your answers with best practices and research
  • General knowledge + your specifics = uniquely strong output

The Investment Case

What does $45 actually buy? Run your numbers.

A salary increase compounds. Every future raise, bonus, and job offer builds on your new base. Pick your market, enter your salary, and see what even a modest increase is worth over five years against a one-time $45.

Pick what fits your market and situation. 3-5% is typical for an in-band raise; 8-15% for a promotion; 15-20%+ for a role or company change. Every market, company, and economic cycle is different.
Extra income / month
Payback on $45
Extra earned in 5 years
incl. ~7% annual raises compounding on the higher base

Illustration only. Actual increases depend on your market, company performance, role, economic conditions, and timing. The annual raise assumption (~7%) varies widely by region and industry. Some markets and periods see lower growth; others see higher. Pick the percentage that matches your realistic situation, not the most optimistic one. The work is yours; the calculator shows you where to aim it.

Honest Outcomes

What if it's not working?

The 5-Step Career Booster works for most people willing to do the work. But not every situation has a promotion at the end. Two scenarios deserve honest answers — not motivational posters.

You're giving your best — and it's still not enough

  • You've done the work. Your manager's assessment is honest signal — the view that actually decides promotions.
  • Sometimes the role genuinely isn't the right fit for your strengths
  • Acknowledging this is not weakness — it's self-awareness, one of the hardest professional skills
  • The right move: conclude honestly, take action, and redirect toward a role where your strengths compound
  • The Career Chessboard helps you see this clearly — that's part of its value

You've done your homework — but there are no openings

  • Performance is strong. Potential is clear. There's simply no opportunity in sight
  • This isn't a personal failure — it's a supply issue, and it happens
  • The right next step: prepare for the external market
  • Brush up your CV/resume — position your achievements in the language recruiters search for
  • Prepare for job interviews — practice your story, your case studies, your salary negotiation
  • Your Brag Sheet and Career Chessboard become your interview preparation kit
